Clippers Game

D had a week of a vacation that he needed to use or lose so he has been home with LB and me all week. It's been wonderful. Since we are going to Pennsylvania in a few weeks for my cousin's wedding we decided just to hang out at home and try to find a few special things to do. We've had a great week and LB has been so happy to spend the week with his dad. We've visited lots of parks, went to the zoo, had a picnic lunch at the park and D got to go to LB's swim lessons. But the highlight occurred on Tuesday morning.

One of the things I've really been wanting to try with LB is to start going to sporting events. D and I basically love all sports and really enjoy going to actual games. My dad was always a big baseball fan so I grew up watching a lot of baseball. These days I don't watch a lot of baseball on tv except for the World Series and sometimes the Little League World Series. (I always cheer for the kids from Japan.) As D's week off approached, I decided to check the schedule for our minor league team here in Columbus. They recently redid their stadium and it's super nice and very kid friendly. I was thrilled when I saw that they had a 10:30am game. All the other games would have meant sacrificing nap or pushing the limits of bed time. Neither ideal in my world. LB is a kid who needs his sleep and I am a mom who prefers to stick to schedules. But the 10:30am game was the perfect time! LB is probably still a bit young for this stuff but D and I figured we might as well introduce him early and then hopefully he'll learn to love it as much as we do. The morning was definitely a success and he has told several people since then that he went to a baseball game. I'll take that as a sign that he had fun. Our seats were perfect. We we were way out in left field because we didn't want to spend a lot of money in case it was a bust. But we were in the second row so we were still pretty close to the action and there was no one in front of us. That meant LB could move around and not disturb anyone. We also lucked out and there was a nice grandparent-like couple behind us who were very entertained by LB and they talked to him a lot, which he loved. Sadly for the Clippers the other team scored a bunch of runs but that was good news for LB because it meant a lot of action in the outfield. He got into the cheering and booing and we had some animated fans in our section that added some spice to the whole scene. The night before the game D taught LB how the players "step and throw the ball." So throughout the whole game when the outfielders would throw the ball back to the infield LB would exclaim to D, "step and throw." It was cute.

When LB started to get a little fidgety we went searching for food and mascots. Thankfully, we found both. I think LB liked the statues of the mascots just as well as the real thing. I wanted to document every moment of it and I'm glad I got some good shots.

I am hopeful we can go again later in the summer. I am thinking a Columbus Crew game will be next up on LB's Sporting Event Tour of 2012. Can't wait!

  1. It cracks me up that he loves mascots and big costumes. So many kids would be scared of those! I love how hard he appears to be cheering in the final picture. Think he's definitely taking after mom and dad in sports enthusiasm!

  2. Looks like fun was had by all. I can practically hear the squeals of laughter in that last shot!
