One of my goals for the winter is to find fun, sensory rich activities for LB to do here at home. Since most days we will be stuck inside we might as well have fun and attempt to be more creative. When we first started meeting with Monica, LB's OT, she noticed that he really didn't like to be messy. It was holding him back from exploring food. We worked on that a lot in OT and LB has really improved in this area. However, I still think it is beneficial for him to explore touching different textures and having fun with it. Today we played with pudding. As a side note, I think D would also benefit from this messy play as he twitches at the sight of a mess, especially messy hands. Instead, I enabled him and had it all cleaned up before he got home from work. Perhaps he will join in our next activity.
Overall the pudding play was a success and LB had a lot of fun. For some reason, I didn't strip LB down to his diaper. That was pretty dumb. I think I was a little surprised that he decided to be so brave with the pudding. It was out of character. Lesson learned. I also was having trouble with my flash so the lighting is weird but you get the idea. It was messy.

I love his face so much. I got in on the fun too and drew shapes and letters in the pudding for LB to identify. Might as well make it educational too.
Don't tell D but I may have found some pudding splatter on the walls. Luckily it wiped right off. And my partner in crime loves to help clean.
I've been perusing the internet for other ideas. Here are some links to what I think we'll be trying in the near future.
I'll let you know how they go. Any other ideas?

Looks like lots of great tasting fun! This is my favorite site for kid activities:

They have tons of sensory activities. Recently we made the cloud dough and Liya played with it for almost an hour (while I cringed at the mess it made!). Yesterday I made up a rice bin for her and that was also a lot of fun.
Oh, another thing I've done is brought the water table (same one Ezra has) in and let her play with various bottles and spray bottles filled with colored water. Two hours of fun with that! I also used the water table for another messy sensory activity.

ReplyDeleteI also have a whole board on Pinterest that is all different play-dough recipes (haven't tried them all, though). And another board that is all OT-Tactile activities, although I can't remember what all is on there at the moment.
