I had mentioned on a previous blog post that Ezra was trying very hard to say the word, "stinky." It is from a book that I read to him. He is still trying very hard to say this word but if you didn't know that is what he is saying then you would have no clue. Does that still count as the first word? Or does it have to be something distinguishable? If so, then we have a winner in that department as well. Ezra has very clearly started looking and pointing at Damon and saying, "Dada." You can't mistake it. His voice is super high pitched when he says it and he gets the biggest grin on his face. Ezra has said "dada" as part of his babble talk for a while but he wasn't saying it in reference to anything. That has now changed. Can you sense that I am not at all jealous about this and am completely fine? Hmmmm. Even though I may be a wee bit jealous it is unbelievably cute. I may be giving him more credit than deserved but I also think Ezra associates the sound of the garage door with Damon. Two times in a row recently he heard the garage door and said, "Dada?" He was right that Damon was coming home. When Damon walks in the door Ezra kicks his legs and shakes his arms and says, "Dada." Damon doesn't have to tell me that it totally makes his day. I will admit to having a little chat with Ezra about the lack of "Mama" in his vocabulary. Hopefully, that day will be soon.
At the suggestion of fellow Gladney mom, Amy, I have started working with Ezra on baby signing. My mother-in-law taught it to my niece and I remember at a wedding my niece was sitting on my lap and she essentially constructed a sentence with two signs in a row. I was blown away and thought my niece was the smartest 18 month old ever. (I still think she is very smart.) Ezra seems to really like signing and I think it is because he is so eager to communicate and interact. So far he has mastered ceiling fan, light and book. He gets super excited when he points to those items and does the sign. I will do the sign back and praise him with lots of encouragement. He eats it right up.
Speaking of mouths, my little guy still has NO teeth. He will be 11 months old on Friday. Anyone else out there have a little one that was late to get teeth? I know they are in there somewhere. Everyday I ask him if he is ready to show me his teeth. So far, nothing.
I do love that toothless grin.
I bet "Dada" is the most precious thing! I can't wait to see Matt become Dada! As for the teeth, I've actually heard in the adoption world, the later the better. It means he's had extra time where he's been getting better nutrients for his teeth to develop better before coming in. If that's true or not, I don't know :-)
ReplyDeleteThat is all so darn cute Emily! It sounds like Ezra is really vocal! Love it. :)
ReplyDeleteNo teeth for Khalil yet either. I asked his pediatrician, and he said it was most likely due to poor pre-natal care. He wasn't concerned at all though, and said that they don't start wondering about teeth until the baby is at least 15 months old. But, I'm a bit anxious to see the teeth! :)
Soooo cute! And I wouldn't worry about teeth, my second one didn't get any teeth until she was 14 months old (and now she is losing them earlier than everyone her age as well....go figure :-) Ezra is absolutely precious! Love watching him change!
ReplyDeleteSo glad he seems to like the baby signs! We used them most with our first and I was amazed at how much he understood before he could talk. And I swear that since he could sign for more milk, eat, drink, etc. that it really cut down on the tantrums!
ReplyDeleteEliot didn't cut a tooth until 11 mos and then he cut 6 at one time. He went from toothless to shark. =) We also used sign for him because he was slow in language development and it worked perfectly. He still uses it as a joke sometimes at age 4, goofy kid.
ReplyDeleteEzra is so freakin' cute. Chew on his face for me. =)
I am sure Mama is not far behind! The working parent gets a lot of special attention upon returning home, but we miss all the big and small day to day things so maybe he's just keeping it fair ;-) It sounds like he is doing so well. I am just so happy every time I read on of your updates!! XO
ReplyDeleteaw! what a beautiful first word to hear as it recognizes family !!!
ReplyDeletecongrats :)
My Elliott was 11 mos old too, before his first teeth arrived.
ReplyDeleteStinky definitely counts as a first word. Any utterance--any repeated sound that indicates something in particular is a word. He's speaking gobs!
Lila was super late to teeth. I think she had maybe two by the time she was 12 months...maybe. You could see them under there, but they were on their own schedule, stubborn little teeth!
ReplyDeleteElijah is the same way with Kevin. As a matter of fact, he only just started saying "Mama" a few days ago. And while I LOVE that he can say it, I'm kinda wishing he'd say it a little bit less, as now my days are filled with him constantly wanting to be held, follwing me around with his arms in the air whining, "Mama! Mama! Maaaaamaaaaa!" Awwww, I hope we can get together soon!
what a cute picture! and how fun that he's saying dada. I have to say- Samuel said dada first, too, and I was ticked- especially since he hardly saw his dada the first year when we were in Guatemala! I still say it is because it's an easier sound to make!! :)
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute toothless grin! And Henry avoided saying Mama for FOREVER. Seriously, I think he said Papa for at least four or five months before Mama emerged. And hello, I was doing a lot of the work! (Not that Papa's don't do the work, too, but you know...)
ReplyDeleteMy Ethiopian girl was a late teether too- not to worry. My dentist said it's not even a concern till at least age 2
